View Full Version : GAME : The Six Degrees of X and Y

Brian Ayers

A lot of you may be familiar with the game, "The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" ... This is a variation of that game ...

For those of you are who are not familiar with the rules of the Kevin Bacon game, here's a run-down :

The point of the game is to see how many steps it takes to get from Kevin Bacon to another actor/actress using other cast members in common movies - and the goal of the game is to make the connection in as few steps as possible - and you must make the connection in 6 steps or less (that's why it's called the Six degress of Kevin Bacon) :)

Example :
Kevin Bacon to Steve Martin

Kevin Bacon was in A Few Good Men with Demi Moore .... Demi Moore was in Nothing But Trouble with Dan Akroyd .... Dan Akroyd was in Sgt. Bilko with Steve Martin ....

This gives a score of 3 (it took 3 movies to get to Steve Martin from Kevin Bacon) ...

Well ... this version of the Six Degrees game is slightly different (and more challenging) ... This is the Six Degrees of X and Y .... X being one actor/actress and Y being another actor/actress ... This will prove the theory that everyone connects to everyone else in 6 steps or less (and trust me, it can be done with virtually anyone) ...

How Will it Work?

Every couple of days (depending on the level of participation) - I will post a new set of names ... It is your job to find the fastest solution in the shortest amount of time (you can only post a solution once per round) .... Since this is done on the computer (where the information is readily available to you) - the point is to find the least amount of steps ...

Just something that I thought might be fun :) .... Let's give it try shall we ?

Reply if you would be interested in this game ...

Thanks,
Brian

i'm not quite sure if i fully understood the difference between your enhanced version and the example you gave us , but it sounds fun and interesting...

how about another example?

Brian Ayers
07-03-2002, 08:22 AM
Well ... another example (slightly more difficult) - would be something like :

Jimmy Stewart to Patrick Stewart

Well ... Since I've done this one before - I'll give you the fastest route :

Jimmy Stewart was in The Shootist with a young Ron Howard ...... Ron Howard was in Osmosis Jones with William Shatner ...... William Shatner was in Star Trek 7 - Generations with Patrick Stewart .... again, that's a score of 3

The problem with using only Kevin Bacon - is that almost all the answer go through a few of his movies, J.F.K A Few Good Men, and Sleepers ..... So, the game gets boring after a while ...

There are some good resource online (such as the Internet Movie Database -- http://www.imdb.com ) where you can find out who's been in what movies .... But, the trick is finding the fastest route ...

Just something I thought might be interesting ... :)

great game... based on the famous theory of 'six degrees of separation' between any two individuals -- the theory has since been debunked (the original study was way too narrow), but as a game concept it is cool :)

Brian Ayers
07-04-2002, 07:08 AM
In the entertainment business (especially movies) it can be accomplished with almost anyone ...

I designed a website ( http://www.arianlloydavery.com ) -- He's a local musician in my area, and he had a very small role in a movie ... So, technically - you can connect me up to Kevin Bacon in 6 steps :)

I play this game all the time with my co-workers .... It's a time killer (and a brain-bender -- especially without any reference material)

I'll wait for more feedback, and then I'll post the first "round"

I don't use any resources ... (then again, I play this game a LOT at work - so, I've heard just about every connection there is) :)

For the real difficult ones - there is the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com ) -- but it's more fun to try it without using that site :)

Glad you solved this Brian, as I am not a Kostner fan I found this one rather challenging and couldn't get further than:

Kevin Kostner got insulted bij Madonna in 'In bed with Madonna', who thinks she's as good an actress as Emma Thompson who starred in 'alot of movies' with Anthony Hopkins.... :D

Anyhow.

Thandie Newton was in Mission Impossible 2 with

Gary Oldman who was in The fifth element with

Jackie Chan

Hi Bombus....Thandie Newton is a young Australian actress who's past films include: MI2, Beloved, Interview with a Vampire, Flirting, The Young Americans (a personal favorite), Jefferson in Paris, Besieged and The Leasing Man....to name a few....I think being able to list all these is a huge indicator that I should stop watching so many damn films :)

Hi Minor......This game just wouldn't be any fun if the questions were too easy :D Nice work on the solution though, I wouldn't have thought about using the Gary Oldman reference....nice move. I have to say that your answer to the bonus question was nothing short of legardary. I must have asked more than a hundred people that question over the years and not one person has ever known the answer.....I am impressed, good work mate.
