View Full Version : A Challenge To All S-t Members

I thought I'd get the next competition going. Here's what I propose.

Design a working lightbulb using nothing but Swish. No external images, no gifs, no Photoshop.

Just to keep it honest, Post your SWFs or HTML, not your SWIs. That way, no one can duplicate your hard work. Deadline is Midnight CST, July 31st 2003.

Here's some incentive ... just to get you going. LITEBULB (http://www.access2k.com/templates/litebulb.html)

Good luck!

Grant

edit - my example will not count in the voting.

Ok everyone. I got myself into trouble now.....You see, I signed up for this competition with the intent of winning....(competetive spirit)....however, not thinking clearly I didn't realize the level of play. So for all of last night and for about 4 hours today I have been laboring to make something worthy of this challenge. I failed, and was thinking about not posting this, but I said I would so I am. Remember that every good forum needs some comic releif every once in awhile.......

<laffin> it's open season on lightbulbs. Anything goes so long as it's 100% Swish. It doesn't have to be anything spectacular Kate. The idea is to promote healthy competition and challenge not just the other members, but your Swish-abilities. <can't believe I said that>

Have fun with it. Competition is why Brian created a forum just for it. Another Swish-Tutorials exclusive!

Yes there is very intersting work we got here - ALL

guys a suggestion :

why don't we leave the judgment of the work to the judge(s) , with out nominating any entry as this # 1 & thats #2 ...... ,
lets be faire to all entries !

Am I talking sence here ? <_< .. as long this is a New Fourm Challenges and Competitions ,,,, Iam not trying to set rolls here , it is just a Suggestion .
What do you think ?

Good Luck to evry one.

Don't get discouraged, you should give it a try!!!

I am a newbie, and said "hey", mine might not be fancy as some of the others....but I added some of my own originality.....that's how you have to think.

Just to let you know, I didn't use the bezier too at all. I don't know if many people did.

Give it a shot, you will learn alot, and it will make you practice with all the great tools in Swish.

I would also suggest that in the future ......all submissions should not be revealed until ...AFTER... the deadline for sumbission is closed....and all entries are posted at the same time.

Two reasons why:

1.) It would not discourage anyone from entering. Just because they think somone elses entry is SO good that they cannot compete. Shucks....let's give everyone a shot at it... and boost morale at the same time here. This would also cut out the vote influences that can happen.

2.) Late submitters get a chance to look at what's out there...and decide to "one -up" the competition. That's one short of resubmitting your entry to get the edge.

Don't get me wrong ...I love a good healthy competition... but the rules have to be alot more fair in order for me to enter one of these things again. That's just me. I counted two "grabbers" specifically on my web link for this competition since I posted. I don't point fingers or name names. I just know what the webstat report tells me. It's a shame that things like that happen but that's the nature of the beast I guess.

Next time I'll just stay out of it and vote.

wilimosisis
07-26-2003, 12:17 PM
Well said VooDoo ;) (By the way... do you have a stat thing that your host provides? Cause I don't have that grabber thing, just hits on each page...)

wilimosisis- My services are provided by the same company that hosts this forum -- SolidLoad. They provide Cpanel monitoring which has WebStat information for Html & FTP. I can get information on robots, spiders & grabbers. I crossrefrence them with my daily connections to pinpoint who and where it came from (or at least an approximation). That's why when I post anything, I track it closely. Not many people do that but I guess I'm a geek when it comes to Internet Packets.

If your interested...Brian can probably expand on this topic for you.

Hi all :wave::

I won't be able to enter this one, cause of time. <_<

I think Voodoo's idea of keeping the entries hidden until the deadline is reached is very good! ;)

In my opinion all unofficial competitions should be decided by the whole S-T community. And the official ones, with prizes, should have judges.

HERE HERE!!

I completely agree. And although I started the inappropriate talk about what I thought of the entries thus far, I am here to apologize and ask forgiveness. Maybe we can get a pinned thread at the top of this forum from Brian or John with the rules for the comps. This is such a wonderful way to express your ideas, learn, and grow as a community as we come together and try to encourage one another to the next level of programming. It amazes me still that this site is so welcoming of people and ideas (and it really helps that we are "family friendly"). I don't know about everyone else, but I actually look forward to *seeing* you all everyday. And I find myself thinking of ways to contribute since I am currently scraping the bottom of the barrel. This is another big KUDOS!!!! to my family here at S-T and a heart-felt thanks to Brian for having the vision, willingness and determination to bring this site to us all.

Guys,
Why do you always say 'here is my cheesy' attempt and rubbish as such?

No entries are 'cheesy', if they were they would be alot yellower and would smell rather nasty.

Everyone has a chance at this.

I'm a newbie and this is my first competition, so I'm not going crazy. Kind of hard to be original, when everyone has a "lightbulb" with some type of on/off switch.....

I think you are right about not changing entries but I wasn't really competing with the others when I changed my entry, I was just challenging myself to make a better light. In future, I will not post my entries into comps until I am 100% finished. I agree that all entries shouldn't be revealed until the closing date and think some sort of rule list should be set up taking into account time zones etc.
